The film tells of only one battle of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 - of the battle on the Volga. The central story line follows the fate of the Soviet soldiers and officers of one artillery battery who, at the price of heroic endeavour and their own lives, did not let the enemy tanks come through.
